Paint Correction 101

When you hear “Paint Correction”, what do you think of? Do you think of those little bottles of touch-up paint that come with some brands of vehicles? Hopefully not – there is a lot more to paint correction at a professional auto detailing shop than slapping a layer of paint on top of scratches.

Process

The goal of paint correction is to level the surface of the paint to get rid of any traces of scratching or swirl marks. If looked at any scratch through a microscope, including swirl marks, it looks like a valley with raised sides. Picture how it looks when you drag your finger through mud – the surface on either side of the depression is raised higher than the surface around it.

Due to the nature of scratches, the only way to achieve a perfect finish is to polish everything down to the same level. Once everything is level, we can use progressively less aggressive polishes (like progressively higher grit sandpaper) to create a mirror shine.

Paint correction is artistry. Although we use machines to help the process be easier and faster, a machine will never have the eye of an experienced paint repair technician, like the experts we have at CJ's Autobling.

Paint correction is artistry. Although we use machines to help the process be easier and faster, a machine will never have the eye of an experienced paint repair technician, like the experts we have at CJ’s Autobling. When you come to an expert shop like CJ’s Atuobling, you are guaranteed not only to get the best results possible but also to have the least amount of material removed. There is only so much clear coat to be polished down, so the process necessitates a gentle touch.

Time

The bulk of the cost of a paint correction comes down to “shop time”. Polish isn’t particularly expensive, nor is the electricity that powers our tools. But a perfect paint correction can take up to 30 hours of intense labour – at its very fastest, paint correction will take at least 6 to 8 hours of time. Paint correction is not a process to be rushed. We do a couple of test spots, and then get started on your vehicle. Every square inch gets undivided attention until the whole car shines like never before.

Care

The best way to care for paint is with a ceramic coating, and every ceramic coating applied at CJ’s Autobling comes with a paint correction. At the very least, your paint requires regular waxing to protect it from environmental contamination, chemical damage, and light scratches.

Regardless of whether you’re getting a paint correction in anticipation of a new ceramic coating, working on your restoration project, or just want to rejuvenate your ride a little, you will be floored by the results. After professional paint correction, your car will look even better than the day it left the factory. To get started, just get in touch.
